October 20, 2011 - Surprise!
Both have strengths and weaknesses.
From out of the shadows
A weird one, to say the minimum. I think I liked it. Not quite sure. I liked the appearance of the Eggbreakers at the end of the comic.
Simon is a cool character. Kinda crazy, yes, but also in need of the Harbinger foundation. The best scene of the book comes at the end of the book.
The Eggbreakers show up at the end of the book to collect Simon and bring him back. Shatiqua has stood up for him and welcomed him into the fray, and the team stands up for him - putting themselves in front of him. Standing off. Not just that, but the Eggbreakers have specific orders to NOT engage the team. I also liked the slowly weakening Pete - foreshadowing what's to come. Of course the second half of the run to 25 is worse - but I don't know if the title ever had any strength left.
Take off that mask!
Not too shabby. Through the eyes of time, of course. Toad sucks. He sucks. And Mastermind's illusions are a bit silly. Professor X pretending to lose his mental abilities, and Magneto's SUPER abilities outside. Well, if you CAN look past that, this issue's kinda fun.
But I do like the Brotherhood. Especially Quicksilver. A lot. He's a fun kinda dude. Scarlet Witch will get better, and the dialogue doesn't exactly express it as well as it might be in the future, but having a character who is evil and good really helps the title. I can remember hearing about X-Men 150 being the first time Magneto expressed something of a second side - but right at the start, we see it in these characters.
