The Avengers! DUH!
Kind of a nice idea
And the art is pretty good, for the most part. Even if it IS making me a little crazy breaking out the old font from the Magnus Unity line...
But it had some BIG gaping holes in it - the least of which is that much of the story was only published online. And while the book probably would have eventually made its way around and re-published that information - or re-presented it in some other way, the story couldn't do that. I mean - look at turok.com back in the corner there! That's even a link for the Dark Horse Dark Key stuff.
The story suffers from wanting to be much more convoluted and complex a story than it ever was. A mess, most certainly. But it was much better than the junk published at the end in the 1-4 Turok. Nice to see the committment to the art - and even the re-appearance of the old origin from the initial run. But not a necessary piece!
This felt very different, again.
Like the story had left behind much of the Silver Age - and flipped quickly into the Bronze Age of it. And it's better in some ways, and worse in others.
For starters, I sort of liked the changes in the art - except Captain America. Some of those looked terrible. The perspective in a few shots - especially Wasp - picking up the growing man - cool. Even if it's Growing Man.
It also threw a few set-up curves, too. The book moved letters around, and the reading went further into the book, too. The ads looked different. Saturday Morning cartoons? And a few GIANT spreads across pages - like the Kang double page in the middle! Sweet. Plus - bringing the Grandmaster into the story was a unique idea, too. Nothing says Contest of Champions more than the old Grandmaster, right? Plus - Hawkeye is now having problems with growing - and the Sinister Squad cliffhanger? Nice work.
