December 25, 2013 - Always darkest...
AND X-O is better again. GREAT!
And in this corner.
The reboot is always a trying concept. On the one hand, what came before stopped working. Sales dropped more than anticipated, the comic lacked direction, or the entirety of the thing just needed desperately to go away.
This one had a few of these problems - and were recognized too late. But this change in direction is excellent. Fresh writing - ringing very closely to what it was mere months ago - re-embracing the past, old villains, returning the characters to their much more reality-based origins - and re-kindling the human side of the character interactions.
And I gotta admit. The prisoner escape would have worked on me. It did!
The Night Phantom from the depths!
Strange, but I kind of liked this Night Phantom character. Yes, it was a fill-in, and yes - it closed quickly - but it had some real lead-ins to where the character was going, and I was able to actually join along - and enjoy the story. I wasn't distracted by the style of the book - even enjoyed the first few pages where the panels lost their connection to the pages, and set out the pace - it was like I even heard the drums.
While the ending was WAY too abrupt - and easy to pop back from again - the story was a good one. Even if we probably knew who the Phantom really was all along.
