September 23, 2013 - As a concept? Great.
Annual vs. Acclaim Adventure Zone. Sounds about right.
Both are bad. Spider-Man is better, but I had higher hopes.
Thank goodness this is over.
This one has more of a feel of a story in it, at least. Not a good story, mind you. The riding of a dino rodeo - and the sabotage that takes place behind the scenes does very little for my confidence.
And does anyone see that the Lost Land has become a lot like the old North Am of the year 4000 here? Blast through this because then it's... Perhaps don't blast. For a science lesson. About catalysts and Newton's Law. Yuck.
The next segment details how to draw comics - from what looks like a Marvel Comics nineties cast-off... AND BIG MAX! Yes, the really strange star of a really bad comic that never ended up being produced by Valiant/Acclaim. Only years later did it see the light of day. After seeing that light...
Megastar? Does it need a description? Um... Dress up Megastar? Something between cute and not at all cute. And a SHALLOW story, certainly. Tesla makes an appearance in the Ninjak comic. The Bad Eggs is so terrible that it doesn't even rate a review. Just thankful that this is the end.
In execution. Well.. Right.
When I initially read comics, back in the nineties, I skipped over Spider-Man for some crazy reason. But I started collecting again in the 350-270 range - right when Spider-Man's parents were coming back into the mix. And I can remember hating the story - but appreciating the telling, to a degree. Of COURSE I wanted to find out what in the world was going on with his parents.
This story, though, is too mired in its own time. I like the idea - of them being wrongly punished. But it doesn't quite sit well in its telling. Maybe I just have something against the Red Skull. He's such a bad villain. I like many of these - just I don't want so much mess. Does Spidey really need to fight all of these middle-Eastern terrorists?
